About Immersion Gold PCB
Immersion gold, also called ENIG (electroless nickel immersion gold), deposits a layer of nickel and a thin layer of gold over exposed copper. The result is a flat, solderable and long-lasting surface. That matters for fine-pitch parts and BGAs, where an uneven HASL finish can cause soldering defects.
We supply immersion gold boards from thin 0.5 mm two-layer boards, such as keyboard boards, to high-Tg multilayers. Immersion gold also makes a durable surface for keypad and switch contact pads.
Typical applications
- BGA and fine-pitch components
- Keypad and keyboard contacts
- Boards that need a long shelf life before assembly
- High-reliability electronics
Common questions
What is the difference between ENIG and HASL?
HASL costs less and solders very well, but leaves an uneven surface. ENIG is flat, suits fine-pitch parts and has a longer shelf life, at a higher cost.
Can immersion gold be used for edge connectors?
Not for connectors that are plugged in often, because the gold layer is too thin and soft. Use hard-gold fingers for those.
